The AFL Players’ Association have released their 2011 Year in Review – their version of a traditional Annual Report, with a twist. Following their brand credo, the publication is written ‘By Players, For Players’ and has been designed (by Spike) in the style of a high-end, modern magazine to further engage the audience and steer away from the corporate coldness of most organisational Annual Reports. The document has been getting rave reviews, with the Players’ Association and Spike both receiving numerous compliments on the final product.

Spike has recently completed a 124-page hardcover catalogue for Sting Sports’ range of boxing and gym equipment. The client wanted something out of the ordinary that didn’t just advertise their products, but also told a story and had eye-catching design and interactive elements such as pull out posters.

Collingwood’s 2012 Membership commercial has been launched, and with our help, it’s been taken to another level. The video features new senior coach Nathan Buckley, the entire Collingwood team and a huge cast of Magpie supporters and “the others”, as well as the distinctive vocals of Jack Thompson delivering the narrative.

PFD Food Services is one of Australia’s largest privately-owned companies and is a remarkable success story from its humble origins. Spike does a wide variety of work for this long-standing client, but were especially excited about the challenge of producing an informative video of the company’s history and operations in an interesting, animated style.

St Kilda Football Club has launched their 2012 Membership campaign which includes a 45 second TVC that featured more than 1000 passionate Saints supporters. The spot was shot at four separate beach locations between St Kilda and Frankston over two days, and inbetween some rather extreme rain and lighting storms. The production was quite a logistical challenge, with co-ordination of not only the cast, but several camera crews, a camera crane and a helicopter all required to complete the project. Hollywood star and Saints No 1 Ticket Holder Eric Bana was the voice of the ad. Spike’s concept was chosen ahead of four other agency pitches and we are extremely proud of the result as the client believes we have not only answered their brief, but delivered a message that is exactly what they were after.

In conjunction with production company SceneOn, Spike has produced a beautifully shot Membership TVC for the North Melbourne Football Club. The spot stars young gun Jack Ziebell, who was the ultimate professional during five hours of filming, and is topped off with a voice-over by You Am I front man and fanatical North supporter, Tim Rogers.

The signing of Shane Warne by the Melbourne Stars BBL team brought a flurry of activity and excitement to the Spike offices. There were newspaper and magazine ads to be placed, media releases and EDMs to be created and sent out and a wide array of supporting material to be produced around the announcement of the cricket legend’s return to the game. Our young resident photographer Steven Sfiligoj was thrust amongst a throng of professional photo agencies and media representatives all clamouring to get snaps of Warnie in his Stars uniform. To his credit, Steve wasn’t in the slightest overwhelmed by the situation and the shoot went off without a hitch.
The Melbourne Rebels have enlisted Spike’s help in their efforts to increase their brand awareness and grow their membership base. The first batch of creative has been produced and released, with more to follow in the lead up to the 2012 Super Rugby season.

Spike were delighted to get the opportunity to work with the Western Bulldogs on their 2012 Membership campaign and collateral. The brief was to deliver creative that was fresh, sharp and different from what has been done previously and to include elements that identify the Club’s geographic heartland.
After a few years on the sidelines, Spike has been nominated by the AFL Players’ Association to produce all the design and collateral for their prestigious MVP Awards Dinner. Held at Crown Palladium, the event continues to grow in stature and is now one of the major evenings in the AFL calendar. The Awards are telecast live on Foxtel, which is a tremendous way to showcase Spike’s creative efforts. We are very proud to be asked to contribute to such an important event for the AFL Players’, as we were to produce the recent “Pride, not prejudice” anti-racism campaign for them.

On behalf of Vecci, Spike have produced an animated video for Sustainability Victoria and their Choose GreenPower initiative. The client wanted a fresh, fun concept that would get the message across without being boring, as well as have the potential to go viral via YouTube. Word of warning, the jingle is incredibly catchy and you may find yourself singing it for days…

Spike was responsible for bringing the Melbourne CBD to a standstill recently – in a recent video shoot directed and put together by Spike for client Westpac, the entire Melbourne Heart team, along with several Westpac branch staff, took part in a scratch match on an artificial pitch in the City Square. Somewhat of a logistical nightmare to co-ordinate, and at the mercy of some inclement Melbourne weather, a dozen videographers captured all the action as the stars literally took to the streets, jumped in taxis and rode trams to all arrive at the final destination. The video’s message tells us that Westpac is “The Team Behind Melbourne’s Team” and it will appear on YouTube, as well as in Westpac branches and above their ATMs.

NRL Premiers Manly have commissioned Spike to be the creative agency behind their 2012 Membership campaign. Former Manly champion and TV personality Paul “Fatty” Vautin features as the Club’s Membership Ambassador and he is the face of the “Earn Your Wings” campaign. It’s an exciting leap into a new sporting arena for Spike, but one that allows us to bring our expertise gained from our work with our AFL clients to the fore.
